Le bois initial est produit dès le départ de la végétation; il a surtout une fonction conductrice. Aussi, les vaisseaux du bois initial sont-ils larges, à paroi peu épaisse; les fibres sont peu abondantes et, de ce fait, le bois est médiocre.
